In July 2020, the Democratic National Convention will be held in Milwaukee, a 600,000-population city on Lake Michigan's western shore in Wisconsin. There are a lot of strategic reasons for the Democrats to convene in Milwaukee, namely because the party lost Wisconsin in 2016 and would like to win it back. But even if you don't need Milwaukee's vote, there are lots of reasons to visit or even relocate here, especially if you love beer, sports, and beautiful city parks.
First, the beer: Milwaukee is nicknamed Brew City for a reason. The city has a nearly 200-year history with making the beverage, thanks to major breweries like Pabst, Schlitz, Miller and Blatz. Though some of the big name breweries have moved elsewhere, local and craft breweries have popped up in their stead, like Lakefront Brewery and Milwaukee Brewing Company. The city's also full of beer bars pumping craft and standard brews, like Burnhearts, Camino, and the Sugar Maple.
Beer goes well with sports, and Milwaukee's got plenty of that, too. The Milwaukee Brewers just clinched the playoffs, and the Bucks picked up a division title in 2019. The Green Bay Packers are located just outside of Milwaukee, but it's a short drive to Lambeau Field.
Milwaukee also has one of the best public parks systems in the U.S., a thriving job market, beautiful Lake Michigan beaches, and a lot of frozen custard (Leon's cannot be missed). Housing here is much more affordable than it is in New York, and the city also offers homeowner incentives for buyers looking to rehab tax-foreclosed properties, matching repair funds through the city's Homebuyer Assistance Program. If any of this sounds appealing to you, here's a taste of what's out there.
