The village of Irvington, New York, is an affluent section of Westchester between Dobb's Ferry and Tarrytown. The village is named in honor of "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" author Washington Irving, who owned a magnificent property, Sunnyside, in nearby Tarrytown, where he died in 1859. The house is a National Landmark and museum, and is open for tours.
Washington Irving's ghost isn't Irvington's only draw. The village, which sits along the Hudson River, is home to a number of lovely restaurants and cafés, in addition to charming boutiques and mom & pop shops. For folks looking for outdoor escapes, a section of the Old Croton Aqueduct runs through Irvington, and makes for a great hiking trail.
Irvington is expensive—the median listing price, according to Zillow, is a hefty $1,150,000. But you can find deals in the slightly lower-priced East Irvington, which is still just a five-minute drive from the village's center. Consider, for instance, this three-bedroom, three-bath ranch house at 25 Mallard Rise, now on the market for $799,999.

The house is about an hour's drive from the city. You can also take Metro-North's Hudson Line from Grand Central to Dobb's Ferry, then take a White Plains-bound bus. That journey, short walk to the property included, also takes about an hour.
