Many New York City buyers look to stretch their dollars with a fixer-upper, but it is not an easy route. On the plus side, you get to make every decision about renovating, including what materials, finishes and appliances to use and how fancy you want to get in the apartment of your dreams. But the downside is the same thing: You still have to make every decision yourself.

In our recent Brick Underground Podcast episode about renovation, guest Jean Brownhill, founder and CEO of Sweeten, has tips on how to determine the scope of a renovation and how to choose materials yourself.

So if you remain undeterred by the challenges of a fixer-upper, here are three co-ops, a townhouse and a condop that could use some work (some much more than others) which are having open houses this weekend.

375 Riverside Dr., #3C, Upper West Side

This three-bedroom co-op is in original condition, with herringbone floors, picture moldings and nine-foot coved ceilings. The building would allow you to turn a third-bedroom closet into a laundry room by adding a washer/dryer and sink, but you can’t put an additional full or half-bath here. It is listed for $1,150,000.

The open house is Sunday, March 11th from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

225 Park Pl. #2F, Prospect Heights

The listing for this 1,000-square-foot one bedroom co-op says it can be converted to a proper two bedroom. Original details include arched doorways, herringbone parquet floors and built-ins. Both the kitchen and bathroom have been updated, so much of the work has been done for you. It’s listed for $849,000.

The open house is Sunday, March 11th, 12-1:30 p.m.

67 Jackson St., #1, Williamsburg

This townhouse (also shown at top) has many historic details, like original fireplaces and built-ins. It also has some updates, including a new kitchen. Previous owners built a wine cellar as well as what the listing calls a “back house,” which is being used as a separate one bedroom with its own entrance to the street. It is listed for $2,495,000

The open house is Sunday, March 11th, 2-3:30 p.m.

5900 Arlington Ave., 11J, Riverdale

This sprawling three-bedroom co-op with a view of the Hudson needs a full renovation, including floors, bath, and kitchen. It is in a full service building with a 24-hour doorman, gym and Olympic-sized pool. The listing notes this can be an investment opportunity: A similar-sized apartment with a full renovation is listed for $742,000.

The open house is Saturday, March 10th, 12-1:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 11th, 1-3 p.m.

4-74 48th Ave., #35EF, Hunters Point

Two apartments are available at this condop building and combining them would create a 1,500-square-foot three bedroom. The luxury high-rise does not require a board interview and amenities include a staffed gym, tennis court and five-level garage. They are listed for $1,050,000.

The open house is Sunday, March 11th, 12:30-2:30 p.m.
